Surviving The First Three Months

For those of you parents out there who recognize that chasing time is such a real thing when it comes to having a newborn, you can understand my lack of updates here.  Outside of that though, I’m here to talk about my Tywalker‘s latest feats of skill and padawan learning!

Three months has passed and our little boy has grown six pounds since being born.  I get the usual comments like “What are you feeding him?” or “Wow, he’s grown!”.  I like to compare him to a twelve pound sack of rice.  Try carrying one of those over your shoulder for long periods of time!  Guess I really need to get some regular updates for workouts on this blog then, huh!

The most rewarding moments are just recently.  The experts say that babies recognize their parents from the beginning, but they only really process and sort out who is who from all of the people carrying them and speaking goo goo ga ga in front of their faces.  But this is the time that little Tyler can recognize that his parents are the ones that he craves the most time from.  It’s true!  Spot a newborn as their parent walks into the room, and you can almost sense they can smell Mommy and Daddy as they walk in.  He can certainly discern my voice or my wife’s voice.  Somewhere between two to three months, he was tracking our movements as well and I’m tellin’ ya this little boy can turn folks into butter with his eyes and winning smile.  My wife is all goo when it happens.  I got a good video on Facebook of him holding up his head too.  He’s getting stronger in that department.  He can kick against the crib rails pretty well too.  We think he’s inherited his mommy’s kung-fu genes.  One thing physically has shown clear this past month.  Tyler is looking quite like a chip off the old block.  To say he’s a “mini-me” is saying it mildly.  We’ve been able to find old photos from my baby photo albums and find that we could’ve seriously passed for twins.  Awesome!  He’s also achieved a winning milestone in my book.

Anyway, it’s good to be in the swing of it.  I’m sure this parenting rollercoaster is just starting.  I’m amazed that this little boy can sleep through about 5 to 6 hours straight at night.  It was crazy having those late night marathons waking up for feedings, diaper changes, and such.  No other parents really tell new parents that you have to prepare for this newborn “marathon”  and boy it feels like a triathalon at times!

But, I’ll tell ya.  I’m in for the ride and so far it’s been quite rewarding just to see him grow bigger and stronger, and hopefully smarter… and I think he’s trying to outsmart his own parents already. Good luck, my lil’ buddy boy.

Project Padawan: Tile Maker

The padawan has a name. Tyler. Traditional meaning of Tyler is one who tiles or makes tiles. For me that could mean several things. By trade he may very well do flooring. But if you see how tiles are placed, there is a certain method or pattern and it takes a watchful eye to tile. Tiles could represent the very pixels on a graphic, the textiles on a fabric, and both hold true of his two parents and their trades. One can also reference some of our favorite Tylers. Tyler Florence (my wife’s Food Network crush). Tyler Perry (the maker of some of my wife’s favorite movies). Tyler Durden (the crazed but tough character from Fight Club). There are some greats named Ty as well. But our very own Tyler is a 7 week old joy and he’s destined for great things. (I got future Tywalker and Ty-Fighter posts in mind for Project Padawan). I’ll tell you what though. His name suited my boy from day one and I can’t see any other for him, so for the only name that my wife and I agreed on for a boy, we named him as such. More about our boy and the latest in these chronicles soon.

Project Padawan: Episode I

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (six years ago on this day in fact!)…  an uber-geeky Jedi time chaser met a beautiful pastry-loving princess in the galaxy’s foremost factory of cheesecake.  With little more than three years of  aggressive negotiations they joined together as Mr. & Mrs., building an empire of marriage to span a Chicago west suburbia.  Now, the two of them get ready to introduce new padawan, Bun-In D’Oven, to a brand new universe…

The 12 week check is good, announcements are out, and there’s a lot of excitement around the family and amongst friends. It’s a great time to consider the life changing new project that I’m on. The Baby Project! And, as some of my co-workers mentioned, I’ll have to set some solid milestone dates to insure a successful delivery! Well, since I haven’t written through the first trimester, those who have children already know the challenges from that first few weeks of pregnancy, but my wife pulled through like a champ and we are excited! Some simple words just can’t describe the feelings a future-daddy has in seeing the image of his tiny child for the first time and seeing his/her thumping heart light. That was the moment some weeks ago when it was all definitely real. Priorities have changed. The game of life has shifted for the best ride ever! My wife and I are witnessing the miracle of creation and building on our family! What an absolute blessing that is! And yesterday our little jumping java bean is making good progress, so we were happy to finally share the news with the family and all you folks! We’ll be talking to you soon. Right now, we’re enjoying the first part of this roller coaster ride! See you next episode…

Daily Mile

Signed up for the Daily Mile today. Something my sister and her fiance have been using to track their running workouts.  Another great tool to integrate with all the social apps.  But, here’s something I’m going to try to follow for myself.  Maybe it will motivate me continue running when I see others record their progress.

Kings and Pawns

“Quando il gioco è finito, il re e il pedone vanno nella stessa scatola” – Italian Proverb

Translation: “When the game is over, the king and the pawn go into the same box.”

You know what it’s all said and done, life as we know it really comes down to how we live it.  We may very well all start from ashes and end in ashes. As the quote says above, kings and pawns play the game and although the pawns purpose is to fight for the king, they hold the same significance in the end… pieces in the same box.

I’m finding that my role in the scope of things is not as more important or less important than others trying to get by.  Sometimes we have to stop and think about where we fit in the grand plan.  For my part I’ve discovered that I am not bulletproof… that I am susceptible to the same harms that can be done to anyone… king or pawn.  But, before I find myself back into the box, I better play a good game in this game of life.

My apologies for being cryptic.  Just thoughts on a page…

Baptism

“The rain on my car is a baptism. The new me. Ice Man. Power Lloyd.  My assault on the world begins now. Believe in myself. Answer to no one.” – Lloyd Dobler, Say Anything

I currently reside in a stormy place these days.  I set off with 2010 to abide by the ideals born of my own Chinese Zodiac year: The Year of the Tiger.  But, I ignored the idea that traditional years of the tiger bring upon surges of change and challenge.  And, I suppose this can be said of what I have experienced so far in 2010.

The first nine months has been a turbulent one.  A time that I can  recognize as matching many of the routine patterns that define who Mike has been in his 36 years of life so far.  But not all of those patterns are healthy.  One of them in particular has been taking control of my everyday, and I’m finding a new low with that pattern.  I am broken… mentally and physically.  It is beginning to show all too clearly.  I need to take a hold of it, or let it go.  And, I’m finding that the only answer is the latter…. Letting it go.

I’m rewatching Lost season 6 the past week and I find myself mirroring the Jack Shephard hero figure.  The guy that tries to fix everything but fails to do so until he really needs to learn that no one can fix everything.  Not even Superman.  Eventually, Jack rises from the depths by accepting his role in the grand scheme.  That his destiny was not born of fame and glory, but of his own faith of the course of life: That finally the only things that remain important are those who journey with you in life.

Yesterday I celebrated my 3 years of marriage with my lovely wife.  And I allowed myself to take time off and celebrate those 3 years with her.  But I allowed one hour of that day to again give in to the demon, and I brought it upon myself… like I always do. And my wife, God bless her, has been so understanding.  But this is my own demon to deal with and it really cannot take a hold of my happiness.  The time has come to rise up and challenge it.

So here I am now.  Maybe using this blog of chronicles as a method of slaying the demon will guide me along this path.  As Lloyd Dobler in the movie Say Anything says at the start of this post…The rain on this day is a baptism.  A new me.  Power Mike.  This blog is my grey trench coat, my mythological island, my fortress of solitude… those who journey with me, you readers as well, can continue to follow, guide, or walk side by side with me.  My assault on the world begins now.

Lightning Strike!

Click on the link below and you’ll see a fantastic shot of two bolts of lightning simultaneously striking the Willis Tower and Trump Tower spires in Chicago.  Excellent!

Lightning Strike!

Was a strange thing that storm.  It came out of nowhere like an ominous attack, and it went away just as mysteriously.

Insanity: Fail!

I’ve said it to colleauges before. After a 30 mile train commute each way to work that largely takes up 3 hours of my day, there are times I would wish to continue a solid regular workout regime. Much less, dieting. So, the 20 in 10 for 2010 goal is failing!

Insanity is excellent. Shreds shreds shreds fat…if you keep up with it that is. So, I’m attempting to start over the week. Took the fit test Day 1 again and will start at new weight X with workout Day 2. Let’s see how it goes.

I discussed P90X with my buddies yesterday and can see what it seems to favor me in my 30s more. But I’ve pulled too many excuses in the mix. So I may very well go back to my precious P90X, but I’m giving Insanity one more try this week.

Insanity Day 2: Plyometric Cardio Circuit

This is gonna be murder.  I did the Plyometric Cardio Circuit workout last night. (Yes, I had a late start after the fit-test, but I’m marking yesterday as Day 2).

Holy moly, was it murder!  Once you realize that you’re not only doing things like suicide drills or ski downs once..you’re doing them multiple times and faster each repetition!  This is crazy.  But, I think it’s just what I need.  Now, if I can only get past the soreness… to be continued…
